It would probably be impossible to leave fat out of our diet totally. Even if it were possible, most of us would not want to do so. This is because many of the positive aspects of our food come from the fats they contain.
The important thing to remember is that not all fat is bad, so learning about the different types of fat can help you make good decisions about what you eat and what to avoid.
There is a lot of information about the damage which the 'bad' fats can do to our bodies, when we eat too much of them.
Blocked up blood vessels, heart disease, over weight and obesity are only some of the possible effects. These problems are caused by two out of the three main types of fats.
Saturated fats, which are found in meat and dairy products etc. should certainly not be used too much. You could try skimmed and reduced fat milk, while cheese from such milk can be really tasty, with much reduced intake of fat.
Butter could many times be replaced with oil based spreads, such as olive oil. This can be just as tasty and quite a lot healthier. There are also other vegetable based products, used by those on vegan diets, which can also be used instead of butter or margarine.
When you look at the labels listing what is in a product, choose the ones with unsaturated fats, as they are thought to be much less harmful.
While you can often be happy with an unsaturated choice, there is one type of fat which many experts think should be left out of our diets altogether. There is even discussion of the possibility of having them banned. These 'unhealthy' fats, which are found in many manufactured food products, such as cookies and breakfast cereals, are called trans-fats.
It would probably be very difficult to avoid them totally while they are still so widely used, but opinion is moving toward cutting down on them, with many doctors on the side of their being banned.
The right amounts of the right kinds of fat can help keep your healthy weight loss diet balanced and interesting. Just try all the time to limit your intake of saturated fats and trans fats.
